On Monday, April 14, Bethany Biswas, associate attorney at Antonini & Cohen Immigration Law Group, spoke with 285 South journalist Sophia Qureshi about alarming reports that female detainees at the Georgia Stewart Detention Center are being transferred out of state without notice.
Bethany explained how such an unexpected transfer will potentially and significantly prolong her client’s detention:
“If she ends up going to a different court, which is our biggest fear, [she might] not have a hearing for a few more months, depending on exactly where the jurisdiction of that court is.”
Such delays can have a serious impact on the ability of detainees to access legal counsel, gather evidence, and maintain contact with family members.
