Part of becoming a legal permanent resident is obtaining not only your Green Card, but also your own Social Security Number (SSN). But if you’ve been filing taxes with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), there are critical steps you must take to protect your tax history, refund eligibility, and even future immigration benefits.
Looking to start your journey towards a Green Card and a Social Security card? Contact us today at (470) 428-3200 to schedule a consultation with one of our experienced Atlanta immigration attorneys. We will provide a thorough analysis of your situation to determine your best possible options.
At Antonini & Cohen, we know how.
STEP 1: STOP USING YOUR ITIN
Once you receive your SSN, immediately stop using your ITIN for tax purposes. Use your SSN on all future tax filings and interactions with the IRS.
Remember: Your SSN is now your primary tax identification number!
STEP 2: NOTIFY THE IRS
You must inform the IRS of your new SSN so they can merge your tax records previously associated with your ITIN. This ensures you receive credit for all wages paid and taxes withheld.
Warning: Failure to notify the IRS may reduce any potential tax refund and retirement benefits.
HOW TO NOTIFY THE IRS
You can notify the IRS of your new SSN in person or by mail. Both methods require a written request that includes:
Your full name and mailing address
Your ITIN
A copy of your CP565 Notice of ITIN Assignment (if available)
A copy of your Social Security card
STEP 3: IRS TAKES ACTION
Once the IRS receives your notification, they will void your ITIN and associate all prior tax information with your new SSN.
Important Note: You do NOT need to file amended tax returns. The IRS will automatically update your tax records once they receive your notification.
