When preparing an immigration application, using the correct form matters as much as providing accurate information. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) regularly updates its immigration forms, instructions, filing fees, and requirements. In some cases, an outdated form can result in your application being rejected and returned before USCIS even begins reviewing your case.

That is why it is important to verify that you are using the correct version of every immigration form before submitting an application or petition.

If you are preparing to file an immigration application or have questions about how a recent change could affect your case, contact Antonini & Cohen at (470) 428-3200 to schedule a consultation with one of our experienced Atlanta immigration attorneys.

Why Does USCIS Update Immigration Forms?

USCIS may publish a new edition of a form to reflect changes in immigration law, regulations, policies, fees, eligibility requirements, or the information it collects from applicants.

A new edition may look very similar to the previous version, but even small changes can be important. Updates may include:

  • New or revised questions

  • Changes to filing instructions

  • Different supporting evidence requirements

  • Updated filing fees or payment procedures

  • Changes to where or how a form should be filed

  • New certifications, warnings, or eligibility information

USCIS maintains a Forms Updates page where it publishes changes to its forms and provides information about new edition dates. Before filing, applicants should also review each form's individual USCIS webpage to confirm the currently accepted edition, filing fee, filing location, and instructions.

What Is a Form Edition Date?

USCIS forms generally include an edition date, which identifies the version of the form you are using. The edition date can typically be found at the bottom left corner of the form and its instructions.

The bottom left corner of immigration Form I-485, Adjustment of Status with the 09/18/26 edition date.

When USCIS publishes a new edition, it may continue accepting an older version for a limited transition period, or it may establish a date after which only the new edition will be accepted.

USCIS also warns applicants filing paper forms to make sure all pages are from the same edition and that the edition date and page numbers remain visible. Mixing pages from different editions can create problems with a filing.

This is why downloading a form months before you plan to file it and assuming it is still current can be risky. Before submitting your application, check the USCIS website again to confirm that your version is still accepted.

What to Look for When an Immigration Form Changes

One of the most important things to understand is that staying current does not simply mean downloading the newest PDF.

USCIS can also update the instructions, filing fees, required evidence, filing addresses, or procedures associated with a form. Those changes may affect how an application should be prepared even when the form itself appears largely unchanged.

For example, a filing prepared using an old fee or sent to the wrong location may lead to a delay or a rejection notice even if the applicant completed the correct edition of the form.

Applicants should therefore review the entire filing process, not just the form itself, before submitting an immigration application.

Recent USCIS Form Updates to Know

Updated 9/24/2026

Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status

  • All applications postmarked or electronically submitted on or after September 18, 2026, must include the 09/04/26 edition

Form I-864, Affidavit of Support Under Section 213A of the INA

  • All applications postmarked or electronically submitted on or after October 1, 2026, must include the 08/24/26 edition.

  • The new form includes a privacy release authorizing USCIS to conduct a credit check. USCIS warns that if a credit or security freeze exists, USCIS may not be able to access the information needed to assess sufficiency. To avoid delays, reply promptly to any USCIS requests to temporarily lift a credit or security freeze.

Form I-539, Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status

  • A federal court has temporarily blocked a new rule that would have changed how long certain students, exchange visitors, and foreign media representatives can stay in the U.S. While the rule is blocked, USCIS will continue using the previous requirements and will accept the 08/28/24 edition of Form I-539 and the 08/21/25 edition of Form I-765, not the newer 09/15/26 editions.
